DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The IUPUI basketball team will continue its rigorous early season travel schedule when it takes on Austin Peay (1-1) on Friday night inside the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Fla.. The game is part of the third annual Glenn Wilkes Classic, hosted by Sports Tours.
Utah won the event last season and Rhode Island claimed the inaugural title in 2007.
IUPUI (2-0) won its opening game of the event, knocked off Drake in the season-opener, 88-82 in Des Moines, Iowa. On Wednesday night, the Jaguars collected their second straight road win with a 69-66 win at Eastern Illinois. Junior
Leroy Nobles led four Jaguars in double-digits with 24 points and senior
Billy Pettiford added 11 points and seven rebounds.
The Jaguars are seeking their best start since the 2003-04 season when they began the year 4-0. IUPUI is 0-2 all-time against APSU after dropping both games of a home-and-home series during the 2000-01 season. IUPUI lost both games by three points including a 77-74 defeat in Indianapolis when Sylvester Allen had an apparent game-tying three from the corner disallowed because time had expired. APSU was led by future NBA'er Trenton Hassell that season.
Nobles comes in leading IUPUI at 25.5 points per game and senior
Robert Glenn is tossing in 23.5 points per. Junior point guard
John Ashworth has helped it all work, handing out eight assists per game and gathering a career-high four steals in the win over EIU. In two games, the Franklin Central-product has 16 assists against just three turnovers.
IUPUI is also slated to take on Auburn and Georgia State at the 10-team event. The Jags will play Auburn at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and conclude with Georgia State at 1:15 on Sunday. All three games can be heard via the web at the link above. Scott McCauley will call the action.
