KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Junior
Robert Glenn led four Jaguars in double-figures as IUPUI outlasted UMKC 60-56 on Saturday night inside historic Kemper Arena. The win ran IUPUI's winning streak to three straight, all having come on the road in the seven days.
"It was our fourth straight road game and we played lethargic," IUPUI Head Coach
Ron Hunter said. "I thought we had tired legs today, but our defense wno the game for us.
"Two weeks ago, we lose this game."
Defensively, IUPUI (12-10, 5-6 Summit) limited UMKC to just 40 percent shooting and forced 19 turnovers. The Jaguars cashed in the 19 miscues into 19 points.
The game lacked flow from the outset as the Jaguars had the same number of technical fouls (2) as made field goals in the opening eight minutes. Glenn earned a pair of technical fouls in a 30-second span, the first coming when he and UMKC (6-18, 2-9) freshman Trey McKinney-Jones got tangled up after a foul call.
Moments later, Glenn was whistled again when it was ruled he grabbed the rim to assist in blocking a Dustin Dibble shot. Spencer Johnson split the ensuing free throws to give UMKC a 9-7 lead with 12:48 left in the first half, but
Leroy Nobles took the lead back by swishing an open three.
IUPUI eventually secured a 23-22 lead into halftime and held UMKC without a field goal for nearly seven minutes to start the second half. During that time, the Jaguars lead grew to nine, capped by another Nobles' three off a feed from
Larry Stone. Junior
Jon Avery extended the lead to 11 with a reverse layup, but UMKC fired back with a 10-0 run behind four points each from Dibble and Letreze Mushatt.
The Jaguars counterpunched with a 9-0 burst, capped by a
Gary Patterson four-point play with 4:33 left. However, careless turnovers helped UMKC rattle off seven straight points in just over a minute to make it a one possession game. IUPUI never lost the lead though, scoring its final 12 points at the charity stripe.
"We had some bad turnovers, made some bad decisions and we lost our cool a little bit," Hunter said. "We got up by 10 and really had a chance to put them away - that's what I was disappointed in."
Fortunately, IUPUI's season-long free throw shooting struggles didn't come back to bite the Jaguars on Saturday. Hunter's squad made just 15-of-25 (60 percent) attempts and missed five in the final minute.
Glenn needed just four field goal attempts to score 15 points as the JUCO-transfer sank 9-of-14 free throws. Glenn also matched his season-high with three rejections and added four steals. Patterson scored 12 points and Avery and Nobles added 10 points and five rebounds apiece. Avery also tied his career-high with three swats.
Sophomore
Adrian Moss rounded out the starting five by tying his career-high with eight points on 4-of-9 shooting.
UMKC, playing without leading scorer Dane Brumagin, got 23 points from Bakari Lewis and 12 each from Johnson and Mushatt. The other six 'Roos combined to score just nine points on 3-of-14 shooting in the loss.
Head Coach Matt Brown's team also outrebounded IUPUI 36-24 thanks to seven each from Mushatt and Johnson. The 'Roos 11-3 edge off the offensive glass led to a 12-3 advantage in second chance points.
IUPUI will now return home for back-to-back home games beginning with South Dakota State on Thursday night in The Jungle. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:30 on XL 950. The game can also be seen via the web as part of the IUPUI LIVE! subscription service.
SDSU knocked off IUPUI 83-63 on Jan. 10 in Brookings.
