INDIANAPOLIS - IUPUI Head Basketball Coach
Ron Hunter will kick off his size 13's in an effort to raise over a million shoes as the Jaguars play host to Centenary College on Saturday night. The women's game will begin the doubleheader at 4:30, followed by the men's game at 7 p.m..
XL 950's pregame coverage will begin at 6:30 and the game can also be seen live as part of the IUPUI LIVE! package.
Hunter partnered with Samaritan's Feet last season and coached barefoot on Jan. 24 against Oakland, raising over 100,000 pairs of shoes that night. This season, Hunter has challenged his coaching colleagues across the nation to join him in an effort to gain a million pairs of shoes for less fortunate children across the world. He also appeared with Governor Mitch Daniels on Friday morning, both in bare feet, to endorse a statewide barefoot day.
The IUPUI Athletics Department urges those wishing to contribute to logon to
www.SamartansFeet.org and click on the 'Donate Now' button. A shoe collection point will also be setup along the concourse during Saturday's doubleheader while a quartet from the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra will perform Saturday's national anthem in their bare feet prior to tipoff.
The charitable act has recently rekindled regional and national media coverage including a feature story by Kyle Whelliston of ESPN.com, an appearance on ESPN's Mike & Mike in the Morning and forthcoming stories on CNN and ESPN's College Gameday, among others.
On the court, IUPUI (9-8, 2-4 Summit) is seeking to snap a three-game losing skid while Centenary (4-14, 2-4) is coming off its first road win of the season and has won two of its past three outings. Junior Robert Glenn has paced IUPUI in Summit League play at 17 points per game - tops among the league's newcomers. The 6-foot-7 JUCO-transfer scored a career-high 24 points in the 67-58 loss to Oral Roberts in The Jungle on Thursday night.
Sophomore Leroy Nobles added 15 points, all in the second half, off the bench.
Centenary is led by senior guard Nick Stallings and 5-foot-10 junior Chase Adams. The duo combines to score 31 points and grab 12 rebounds a game.
