GREEN BAY, Wisc. - The IUPUI men's soccer team captured a share of the Country Inn & Suites Green Bay Nike Soccer Classic title on Sunday by picking up a hard fought 1-1 tie with host UW-Green Bay at Santaga Stadium. The match featured nine cards and 49 fouls in 110 minutes action.
The Jaguars were whistled for a season-high 27 fouls and logged four of the game's cards in the draw and UWGB was assessed 22 fouls and a red card along the way.
The IUPUI (3-3-1) offense got on the scoreboard with just 37 seconds left in the first half when freshman Taylor Rhodes hit a laser beam past UWGB's Adam Stikl. Fellow freshman Perez Agaba set up the play by shifting a pass to Rhodes, who netted his first career goal.
However, UWGB (2-4-2) answered just 58 seconds into the second half as Ilya Ksenidi notched his second goal of the season. Ksenidi gathered a loose ball inside the 18-yard box and hit a sliding shot past IUPUI freshman goalkeeper Tyler Keever.
UWGB went down a man in the 54th minute when Banks was sent to the sideline, yet the Phoenix still outshot the Jaguars 11-5 from that point forward.
IUPUI nearly took the lead in the 68th minute when senior Cameron Williams had a shot attempt clang off the post, while the best look by either team came in the 108th minute.
Senior Nick Lance sent a corner kick deep into the box and sophomore defender Derek Craig skied above the crowd, but had his header hit the crossbar on its way out of bounds.
UWGB outshot IUPUI 19-13 on the day as senior Eric Weigman led the Jaguars with three attempts. Weigman was one of four Jags named to the All-Tournament Team as he was joined by freshmen Matt Guy, Yogi Snider and Keever.
Keever was credited with five saves as his record moved to 1-1-1 as a starter.
IUPUI will now return home to take on Xavier University on Wednesday night at Kuntz Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m..
