EVANSTON, Ill. - The IUPUI men's soccer team was able to slow down No. 20 Northwestern's persistent offensive attack on Sunday at the Lakeside Classic, but still finished on the losing end of a 2-0 decision. Senior goalkeeper
David Barszczowski recorded a career-high 10 saves as the Wildcats outshot IUPUI 29-7 overall and 12-1 on goal.
"Dave made some phenomenal saves today," IUPUI Head Coach
Steve Franklin said. "You could tell Northwestern is a top 20 team. They played with a lot of energy and they played with a lot of experience on the ball against an unexperienced team. Everytime we bandaged up a problem, they attacked us from another angle."
Despite the lopsided shooting numbers, the Jaguars had a great scoring chance early in the match when junior
Caleb Lindemann got loose on a breakaway against NU (2-0) goalkeeper Misha Rosenthal. Dribbling in from the left side, the Dayton-transfer hit his shot just wide of the far post just over five minutes in.
Northwestern's Matt Eliason made it 1-0 less than 10 minutes in, capping a flurry of shots from deep in IUPUI (0-2) territory. After two attempts were blocked by IUPUI defenders, Eliason caught Barszczowski off his back line and roped a shot past him from just beyond the top of the box.
The IUPUI defense hunkered down from there, keeping the deficit at 1-0 going into halftime.
NU's Eamon O'Neill added an insurance goal in the 51st minute to set the final margin.
Offensively, Franklin moved junior forward
Eric Weigman into the center midfield in the second half with his team still seeking its first goal in 2008. After the move, the Jags got good looks at attempts from freshmen
Matt Guy and
Tyler Fritcha, but still failed to get on the board.
"We're still lacking that central midfielder, playmaker right now," Franklin said. "Our problem is that we're getting two against four and two's not going to beat four. We're getting to that point where it's becoming a confidence thing.
"We need to get a goal so we can kind of keep our chins up."
Barszczowski and Weigman were both named to the 11-man Lakeside Classic All-Tournament team.
IUPUI will now return home to host Valparaiso at Kuntz Stadium on Friday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.. Live stats will be available at IUPUIJags.com.
