EVANSTON, Ill. - The IUPUI men's soccer team begins its 2008 campaign this weekend at the Northwestern Lakeside Classic against a couple of familiar foes. On Friday, the Jaguars will play Northern Illinois at 5:00 p.m. and on Sunday, IUPUI will battle host Northwestern at 2:30 p.m..

IUPUI is 3-0-0 all-time against NIU and lost its previous meeting with Northwestern. 

Northwestern enters play ranked No. 16 by College Soccer News and No. 20 by the NSCAA. 

Head Coach Steve Franklin's team had a sluggish preseason offensively, dropping 1-0 decisions to Northern Kentucky and Loyola (Ill.). Senior goalkeeper David Barszczowski yielded both goals, playing a half of both matches. IUPUI started six newcomers against NKU, but is hoping for an offensive shot in the arm as senior Nick Lance returns to the lineup in the midfield.

In addition, senior defenders Ben Heidari and Dan Heidari return to their center back spots and sophomore Weston Hawkins had an impressive preseason from his outside back position.

IUPUI's home opener is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 5 versus Valparaiso at Kuntz Stadium. That match will kickoff at 7:00 p.m..
