IUPUI advanced by knocking off No. 7 seeded UMKC 69-65 on Saturday night at the UMAC. Senior
Austin Montgomery posted his first career double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds and junior
George Hill chipped in 16 points. Hill sank four free throws over the final minute and came up with a timely loose ball in the final seconds to ice the victory.
As a team, IUPUI (25-6) hit 21-of-25 at the free throw line while UMKC (11-21) missed 9-of-17 attempts. The victory was the Jags eighth consecutive first round triumph as head coach Ron Hunter's team has never lost in the opening round of the postseason.
No. 3 seed Oakland (17-13) advanced to the semifinals round by virtue of a 80-66 win over Western Illinois on Sunday night. Junior sharpshooter Erik Kangas led Oakland with 26 points in that victory.
IUPUI and Oakland split their season series this year with both teams holding serve on their home floors. The Jaguars roared past the Golden Grizzlies on Jan. 24 in The Jungle as Montgomery led five IUPUI players in double-digits with 20. OU returned the favor on Feb. 21, handing IUPUI its worst loss of the year, an 84-69 defeat in Rochester. Derick Nelson, a First Team All-Summit pick, led OU with 19 while Hill matched him for game-high honors.
The Jags are 2-0 all-time against Oakland in the postseason.
