OAKLAND'S SECOND HALF BLITZ SNAPS IUPUI'S EIGHT-GAME WINNING STREAK

OU reels off 22-4 second half run to hand Jags first loss since Jan. 19

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Oakland unleashed a decisive 22-4 second half run on its way to an 84-69 win, snapping IUPUI's eight-game winning streak at the Athletics Center O'Rena on Thursday night. Junior George Hill led IUPUI with 19 points in the defeat. The 84 points allowed were the most by an IUPUI opponent this season and the 15-point loss was IUPUI's largest margin of defeat in 2007-08.

"We didn't get the job done tonight," IUPUI head coach Ron Hunter said. "We didn't play our game in the second half.

"We'll learn from this and move forward. We'll come out on Saturday and play better."

IUPUI (21-6, 13-3 Summit) led 50-44 with 13:03 left when Billy Pettiford dropped in a twisting layup in traffic, but OU (14-12, 9-6 Summit) countered with baskets on its next eight possessions. Derick Nelson opened with back-to-back layups before the Golden Grizzlies found their collective three-point strokes.

Erik Kangas swished an open trey from the baseline corner before Brandon Cassise splashed three straight, capped by a 27-footer off the right wing, making it 62-52 with 8:59 to play. The Jags got no closer than eight the rest of the way as Oakland connected on 6-of-7 from beyond the arc in the second half. 

Oakland outrebounded the Jaguars 34-18 for the game and outscored IUPUI 27-5 at the free throw line.

IUPUI hit eight first half threes on its way to a 38-36 halftime lead, but went 0-of-5 in the second half. Oakland led 27-19 with 6:43 left in the first half before the Jags reeled off a 10-0 run. Hill and Gary Patterson started it with threes and Pettiford and Bill Van Senus closed it with consecutive layups. 

After Oakland tied the game at 29 all, the Jags hit threes on three straight possessions to make it 38-32 before the Grizz closed the half with four straight points.

Nelson finished with 19 points and six rebounds and Johnathon Jones added 15 points and seven assists. Cassise made all five of his field goal attempts, including four treys, to finish with 14 points off the bench. 

Senior Austin Montgomery had 15 points and a team-high four rebounds and Patterson chipped in 11 points and five assists. Pettiford added 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting and Van Senus had four of the Jags' 14 bench points. The 7-foot senior had just two points all season entering Thursday's game. 

IUPUI shot an impressive 53.8 percent from the floor, but saw 13 Oakland offensive rebounds result in 15 points. Meanwhile, the Jags gathered just four offensive boards and converted them into four points. Oakland torched the nets at a 65.2 percent clip in the second half to finish the game at 51 percent overall.

IUPUI caps its two-game road trip on Saturday when it takes on IPFW at Memorial Coliseum at 4:00 p.m.. Pregame coverage begins on Freedom 95.9 FM at 3:30 as Greg Rakestraw calls the action. The Jags will seek a season sweep against the Mastodons.
