INDIANAPOLIS - Junior Robert Glenn scored a team-high 18 points and senior guard Gary Patterson tossed in 16 as the Jaguars outlasted UMKC 72-69 inside The Jungle in a New Years Eve matinee.

Playing for the first time ever on the final day of the calendar year, IUPUI had a 10-point lead with just over five minutes left, but UMKC's perimeter based attack made things dicey for the hosts down the stretch. UMKC senior Dane Brumagin scored 19 of his game-high 23 points in the second half and Bakari Lewis added 18 on 4-of-4 from three for the Kangaroos.

IUPUI improved to 8-5 overall and 1-1 in Summit League play and UMKC fell to 5-11 and 1-2 in the league.

"Our goal was to end the year with a 'W'" IUPUI Head Coach Ron Hunter said. "We did that. I didn't especially like how we ended the game, but we'll take the win and get ready for Southern Utah on Friday."

"We got a couple of stops when we needed them and hit our free throws for the first time all year, but we need to get better. If we're going to win this league, we've got to get a lot better."

After Spencer Johnson capped a 10-0 UMKC run with a layup to tie the game at 64 all with 2:36 left, Glenn answered with a 16-footer as the shot clock was winding down at the other end to put IUPUI back up by two. UMKC's Reggie Hamilton missed a contested trey on the ensuing possession with 1:41 to play and Leroy Nobles upped the lead to three by splitting a pair of foul shots.

The Jaguars got another defensive stop when Lewis came up empty on a jumper, giving IUPUI the ball with just over a minute left. Content to drain the shot clock, Patterson misfired on a leaning three from the left wing, but Glenn swooped in for the offensive rebound and shuffled the ball to Patterson who was immdiately fouled with 17.5 seconds left.

Patterson and John Ashworth both swished a pair of free throws in the waning seconds to help the Jaguars escape with the home win.

Patterson made 6-of-7 free throws and 2-of-4 from downtown for his 16 points and Glenn hit 7-of-11 shots and grabbed nine rebounds in 22 minutes off the bench. The tandem of Glenn and Jon Avery ran roughshod over UMKC's smaller interior defenders to fuel IUPUI's attack.

Avery hit 4-of-5 shots to finish with 10 points and eight rebounds in 25 minutes and rookie Alex Young continued his solid offensive play, tossing in 13 points to reach double-digits for the ninth straight outing. IUPUI outrebounded UMKC 34-32 and used its size advantage to get to the foul line 27 times.

The Jaguars connected on a season-high 21 free throws and matches its season-high by making them at a 77.8 percent clip. UMKC attempted just nine foul shots, hitting five.

Brumagin hit 9-of-14 shots, including 4-of-8 from deep, to finish with 23 points, six rebounds and four assists. As a team, UMKC hit 10-of-24 (40.0 percent) from beyond the arc.

"We knew we had a size advantage and we wanted to expose that," Hunter said. "Robert Glenn played his butt off today. Jon gave us some really good minutes in the first half, but I think Rob added another dimension to our team today."

The Jaguars led nearly the entire first half, building an early 15-6 lead on back-to-back Patterson threes. IUPUI pushed the lead to 14 with 1:48 to play in the half when Avery converted a traditional three-point play but UMKC chiseled the edge back to 37-26 by halftime.

IUPUI continues Summit League action on Friday when it hosts Southern Utah in The Jungle at 7:00 p.m.. Pregame coverage begins on XL 950 at 6:30 p.m.. The game can also be seen as part of the IUPUI LIVE! package on IUPUIJags.com.
