PHOENIX - Coming off a stinging home defeat last Saturday night, the IUPUI Jaguars will get a change of scenery when they head west to take on No. 20/18 Arizona State at the Desert Classic at U.S. Airways Arena, home of the NBA Phoenix Suns. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. EST (1:15 MT) and the game can be heard locally on XL950.
Arizona will take on No. 4/4 Gonzaga in game two of the Desert Classic.
Sunday's game is the first of two straight weekends on the road as the Jaguars will travel to play Seton Hall on Dec. 20.
IUPUI (5-3) comes in 0-6 all-time against ranked opponents and 0-1 against members of the Pac-10 Conference, having lost at then No. 2 Arizona in 1999. The Jaguars are led by freshman
Alex Young, The Summit League's top freshman scorer at 14.1 points per game. Recently, Wabash Valley JC-transfer
Robert Glenn has helped shoulder the scoring load, scoring 17 of IUPUI's 48 points in the 58-48 loss to Western Illinois.
Glenn also leads The Summit at 2.1 blocked shots a night.
Sophomore
Leroy Nobles checks in at 10.9 points per game and is IUPUI's top three-point shooter at 39 percent. The 6-foot-5 swingman also leads the Jaguars in minutes played.
ASU (7-1) comes in on a three-game winning streak and is led by 6-foot-5 sophomore James Harden. A preseason All-American pick, Harden enters Sunday's game averaging 25.5 points, 7.3 rebounds and 4.3 rebounds a game and is shooting 58 percent from the floor. The Sun Devils, coached by Herb Sendek, have four starters netting double-digits in the scoring column and are outscoring the opposition by nearly 17 points a game this season.
IUPUI Head Coach
Ron Hunter was an assistant for Sendek at Miami (Ohio) in 1993-94 as MU finished 19-11 overall and tied for second in the Mid-American Conference standings. Miami was later invited to the Postseason NIT that season.
