DANVILLE, Ky. -- Swimming competitively for the first time in three weeks, the IUPUI swimming and diving teams split with Centre College Friday night. The men defeated Centre, 152-142, while the women fell, 181-107.
Overall, the Jaguars took 12 first-place finishes in the meet, with
Tyler McGowan leading the way with three first-place finishes. In the diving well,
Jaron Tuttle picked up two key first-place results, while
Chen Ni swept the diving events on the women's side.
McGowan won the 200 freestyle to pick up the Jags' second first-place finish of the meet, touching the wall in 1:48.96; in the 200 butterfly, McGowan was first in 2:01.18, winning by over five seconds. The Vincennes Lincoln-product won his third event of the night in the 500 free, pacing the competition to win in 4:59.58.
In the pool,
Michael Steurer swept the backstroke events to win twice; early in the program, Steurer won the 100 back in 55.66. Swimming the 200 back later in the meet, Steuer won by over three seconds in 1:58.54.
Craig Noakes recorded the other win for the IUPUI men's swimmers, taking the 200 breaststroke in 2:18.62 to create a 1-2 finish with teammate
Andrew Heideman.
Tuttle's two wins helped the Jags finish 10 points ahead of the Colonels; in the 1-meter competition, Tuttle tallied a score of 312.65, the ninth-best score in school history. Again diving off the 1-meter board, but with 11 dives, Tuttle set a new school record with a score of 546.60, shattering the old school record of 487.85.
On the women's side,
Carrie Ford picked up two first-place finishes; the sophomore tallied IUPUI's initial first-place of the night, winning the 1000 freestyle in 11:35.30. Teammate
April Robinson was right behind, touching the wall in 11:37.18.
Again proving to be dominant in the distance events, Ford won the 500 free, winning by nearly nine seconds in 5:26.67.
Ni continued her excellent early-season form, posting a score of 228.90 on the 1-meter board; later in the meet, given 10 dives on the 1-meter board, Ni set a new school record with a score of 423.10, breaking the old record set on Feb. 18, 1999.
The Jaguars will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 8, when they continue their tour of the Bluegrass State in Lexington against the University of Kentucky. The meet will begin at 9 a.m. ET.
