TULSA, Okla. - Dubbed the Summit League Showdown by those in the Sooner State, the IUPUI basketball team will head west to take on Oral Roberts on Thursday night at the Mabee Center. ORU (10-5, 5-0) has won seven of the past eight meetings between the two programs, including three-in-a-row.
The Golden Eagles come in as winners of four of their past five games, including a 66-60 win at Oakland last Saturday. Senior center Shawn King is the reigning Summit League Player of the Week and averages 10.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game. JUCO-transfer Robert Jarvis leads ORU in scoring at 16.2 points per game off the bench. The 5-foot-10 guard hits better than three threes per game at a 43.5 percent clip.
IUPUI (13-3, 5-0) has won 12 of its past 13 games after opening the year 1-2. The Jaguars 13-3 overall mark and 5-0 record in league play are both the best in the program's history. Junior
George Hill, the Summit Preseason Player of the Year, has lived up to the hype, averaging 20.9 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.2 assists per contest. Steady senior
Austin Montgomery comes in scoring 12.8 a night and sophomore
Jon Avery checks in at over 12 points and five rebounds per.
Behind a ferocious defensive effort, the Jaguars swept two of the Summit's newest members last week in The Jungle. On Thursday, IUPUI outmuscled North Dakota State in a 60-46 romp, marking the Bison's lowest offensive output since 1991. The Jags followed that up with a 72-44 pasting of South Dakota State on Saturday.
SDSU's 44 points were the fewest by an IUPUI opponent since the 1999-00 season. Sophomore
Billy Pettiford scored a career-high 17 points in the victory to lead four Jags in double-figures. No SDSU player reached the 10-point plateau in the loss.
