IUPUI PREPARES TO FACE NO. 7 OAKLAND IN MID-CON TOURNEY OPENER

No. 2 seeded Jaguars to face reigning tournament champs at John Q. Hammons Arena

TULSA, Okla. - The IUPUI basketball team, having shared the program's first-ever Mid-Con regular season title this season, looks to start the postseason with a bang when they face No. 7 Oakland in the quarterfinals round on Saturday night.

Game time is slated for 9:30 EST (8:30 CST) from the John Q. Hammons Arena at the UMAC in Tulsa, Okla..

IUPUI finished the regular season at 18-9 overall and 13-3 in league playing, including a perfect 8-0 in The Jungle. Head coach Ron Hunter was voted the league's Coach of the Year for the second time in his career, while senior swingman Maushae Byles (Racine, Wisc./Racine Case) was named the league's Sixth Man of the Year.

Senior Brandon Cole (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis) and sophomore George Hill (Indianapolis, Ind./Broad Ripple) were both picked First Team All-Conference, marking IUPUI's first-ever first team duo.

IUPUI swept the season series with Oakland, posting a one-point win on Jan. 4 in Rochester and a 15-point win on Feb .5 in Indianapolis. The Jags are 5-0 all-time in the opening round of the Mid-Con Tournament and 9-4 (.692) all-time in the postseason event.

Oakland, the reigning Mid-Con champs, won the league title last season as the No. 7 seed. The Golden Grizzlies knocked off the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 1 seeds in succession last season to gain the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament berth.

OU is led by Mid-Con Newcomer of the Year Calvin Wooten, who comes in averaging 19.9 points per game and is hitting 39.4 percent from three-point range. He is aided by Vova Severovas' 15.2 points and 6.7 rebounds per game, while Ohio State-transfer Rick Billings is posting 11.2 points per game.

The winner of this game will face the winner of the UMKC/Chicago State game and will tipoff in the semifinals round at 8:30 CST on Monday night.
