CEDAR CITY, Utah - After having its nine-game winning streak snapped at Chicago State on Thursday night, the IUPUI basketball team heads to Southern Utah (9-19, 7-8 Mid-Con) on Saturday to conclude the regular season slate. Tip time is 7:35 pm MST (9:35 pm Indianapolis-time).
IUPUI (18-8, 13-2 Mid-Con) needs either a win over the Thunderbirds or an Oral Roberts loss to Valparaiso to garner the No. 1 seed in next weekend's Mid-Continent Conference Tournament. The regular season champs are assured postseason play, either in the NCAA Tournament or NIT .
The Jaguars have already secured at least a tie for the regular season conference crown and could become the league's first 14-game winner since 1994-95.
On Thursday, the Jags couldn't overcome an off shooting night as Chicago State hung on for a 74-66 win at the Dickens Center. CSU guard David Holston scored all 17 of his points in the second half in the win.
The Jags hit just 42 percent from the floor and 68 percent from the foul line in the defeat. Sophomore guard George Hill (Indianapolis, Ind./Broad Ripple) hit 9-of-15 shots for a game-high 22 points while junior guard David Barlow (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) added 14 points and five assists.
The loss was IUPUI's first since Jan. 14. The Jags have won the past five meetings with Southern Utah, including a nail-biting 67-66 win over the T-Birds in The Jungle on Jan. 7. Junior guard Brandon Cameron (Gary, Ind./West Side) came up with a clutch steal and two free throws with 9.8 seconds left to give the Jags a thrilling win.
IUPUI has won its last three trips to Southern Utah dating back to the 2002-03 season.
Thursday's game can be heard on ESPN 950 or online at ESPN950.com and indianasportsradio.com. Greg Rakestraw, voice of the Jaguars, will be on the call with pregame coverage beginning at approximately 9:00 pm.
