CHICAGO - Riding the nation's seventh longest current winning streak, the IUPUI basketball team heads to Chicago State on Thursday night hoping to reel in the program's first-ever Mid-Continent Conference regular season title. The Jags clinched a share of the league title last Thursday night with a 65-49 win at Centenary and can seal the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Mid-Con Tournament with one more win.
The Jags have won their past nine games and have been victorious in 15 of their past 17 contests since Dec. 30. The Jags' current winning streak is the program's longest since the 1984-85 season. IUPUI also climbed two places to the No. 23 spot in this week's CollegeInsider.com's Mid-Major Top 25.
Last Thursday, senior Brandon Cole (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis) hit 8-of-11 from the floor, including 5-of-7 from beyond the arc, to help the Jags improve to 18-7 overall and 13-1 in Mid-Con play at Centenary. Cole finished with 23 points while super sophomore George Hill (Indianapolis, Ind./Broad Ripple) added 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists in the win.
The Jags surged out to a 16-2 lead in the game's opening eight minutes and never looked back. The Gents closed within five in the first half, but IUPUI used a 7-0 spurt to close the frame to take a 12-point edge to the locker room. Alexander Starr was the lone Centenary player in double-digits with 14.
Thursday's game at Chicago State (7-18, 6-8 Mid-Con) is the first of a two-game trip that concludes at Southern Utah on Saturday night. IUPUI beat CSU 87-64 in The Jungle on Dec. 30 to open Mid-Con play and have won the last two games in the series.
Hill had 28 points and nine rebounds while Cole had 21 points in the win. The Jags hit 11-of-20 (55.0 percent) from long range and forced 17 turnovers in that triumph.
Thursday's game can be heard on ESPN 950 or online at ESPN950.com and indianasportsradio.com. Greg Rakestraw, voice of the Jaguars, will be on the call with pregame coverage beginning at 7:30 EST.
