CEDAR CITY, Utah. - The IUPUI women's soccer team wrapped up its two-game trip to Cedar City with a 4-1 loss to Boise State on Saturday. Freshman Emily Hicks (Batavia, Ohio/McNicholas) scored his first-ever goal in her first collegiate start.
IUPUI head coach Chris Johnson opted to give a number of players some much needed rest after playing 110 minutes the previous day.
"Today gave us the chance to let some kids play and see what they could do," Johnson said.
Boise State scored the match's first goal in the sixth minute against senior goalkeeper Sarah Webster (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern). Nicole Coleman got an assist by playing a corner kick to Randi Baker, who finished the play.
Hicks tied the score late in the first half after teammate Cori Martin (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) tested BSU goalkeeper Michaela Morrison with a shot on goal. After Morrison made the save, Hicks was able to capture the rebound and tally her first-ever score.
Boise State got the eventual game-winner in the 35th minute when Chelsy Skaw took a corner kick that bounded off an IUPUI defender and into the net. Molly McDonald and Melanie Bohnet both scored their first goals of the season in the second half to add some insurance. Coleman picked up her second assist of the match on the game's final score.
Boise State outshot the Jags 19-10 for the match. Hicks and Martin had three attempts each for the Jags. Baker and Coleman both tried four shots apiece.
The loss dropped IUPUI to 2-5-2 overall while Boise State improved to 6-2-1.
IUPUI doesn't play again until Oct. 5th when they host IPFW at Kuntz Stadium. Johnson plans to give his troops some time off before they next hit the field.
"We need to get some rest and get healthy," Johnson said. "Angie Pilat is still a little banged up and Lisa (Gebhard) could use rest to get healthy.
"We accomplished what we wanted to on this trip. We got a point in conference play and got the chance to look at some kids in a game setting."
Redshirt freshman Brandi Jakubiec (Grand Haven, Mich./Muskegon Catholic Central) and sophomore Krista Cowan (St. John's, Newfoundland/Bishop's College) were both given their first-ever starts along with Hicks. Webster made six saves in goal in her first start of the season.
